Explore the Magic of Mondoto Peak: The Gateway to Heaven in Ordesa National Park

The ascent to Mondoto Peak is an unforgettable Pyrenees adventure. This natural viewpoint, at 1,957 meters above sea level, offers spectacular views of Añisclo Canyon and Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. Whether you're an experienced hiker or nature enthusiast, this route has something for everyone.

Why Choose Mondoto Peak

Mondoto Peak offers one of the most accessible routes for panoramic Pyrenees views. From its summit, you'll see the imposing Monte Perdido massif, deep Añisclo canyon, and surrounding valleys. Its privileged location makes it ideal for observing local wildlife and flora.

The Legend of Mondoto Peak

Legend says Mondoto Peak is home to a guardian spirit protecting Añisclo Canyon and its visitors. This spirit, known as "The Heights Watchman," appears on starry nights to guide wandering travelers. Locals say those who climb with respect for nature are rewarded with clear skies and renewed energy.

Ascending Mondoto Peak: Route Details

The trail begins in Nerín village, 20 minutes by car from Vío. This medium-difficulty route takes 3-4 hours, with a 650-meter elevation gain - perfect for those seeking a moderate challenge while maintaining safety.

Take the path from upper Nerín, beside the barrier opening to Cuello Arenas track. Park before the barrier, respecting clearways. The trail, marked "to Mondoto", is wide and clean, ascending gradually up the mountain's southern slope.

About 500m from the start, there's a fork leading to Mondoto (right) or Cuello Arenas (left).

This is the only fork on the route. Take the right path and continue ascending, crossing Biarros ravine to reach "Estiva entrance", a traditional passage for people and cattle accessing Vió Valley's summer pastures. At Estiva entrance, at Mondoto mountain's natural base, continue right. The final stretch offers majestic views of Monte Perdido Limestone Massif.

On clear days, the summit offers the best views of Añisclo Canyon and Monte Perdido Massif. Return via the same path to Nerín.

La Estiva and Shepherding in Vío Valley

High mountain shepherding begins in May. Mid-month, weather permitting, local farmers with grazing rights lead their flocks to Mondoto peak's base, entering summer pastures.

Sheep and cattle herds grazed extensively until winter snows, enduring storms and heavy rains. Sheep sheltered in Lacunas, Las Espluquetas, and Sabarils caves overnight during storms.

Surprisingly, herds climb to Mondoto's peak (1,957m) during coldest, rainiest days - perhaps finding shelter as Celts once did.

Today, only two families use Estiva grazing rights. Casa Patricio, the only sheep herd in Estiva, has maintained Churras Tensinas bloodline for over 150 years.

This generational connection allows free-range grazing, with sheep passing knowledge of pasture boundaries from mothers to daughters. Casa Patricio focuses on agriculture during these months to provide winter fodder.

While self-sustaining in Estiva, shepherds carry 25kg salt bags to flat rocks where sheep gather for essential minerals.
